Week 2 Reading Reflection

What surprised me the most in Chapter 1 was the point the author made when he said there was a difference between entrepreneurs and small-business owners.  I always thought that they were the same thing.  Although they have some similarities, they also have some key differences.  For example, small business owners are not necessarily focused on growth.  They may prefer a more stable approach to running their business.  Entrepreneurs strive for growth and profit.
A part of the reading that confused was when the author said that gazelles do not survive.  Gazelles are business establishments with at least 20 percent sales growth every year for at least five years, starting from a base of $100,000.  From that definition, they sound like they would be successful.
I would ask the author why gazelles do not survive, because I do not understand how a business that grows for its first five years fails.  I would also ask the author how one could learn about entrepreneurship if they do not go to college.  I am curious about this because many people in America cannot afford to go to college.  I would like to know if these people still have the ability to become successful entrepreneurs.
I did disagree with one of the myths of entrepreneurship that the author brought up.  The myth was that all entrepreneurs need is luck.  I do not think that this is a myth.  Being in the right place at the right time is huge in entrepreneurship.  I have seen many worthy businesses fail, while inferior businesses succeed.  Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good.
